Mentorship for the 13th Toyota Eco Youth Finalist Schools in Makassar: Youth Initiative to Produce Biofuel from Fruit Waste

Makassar, South Sulawesi – The younger generation plays a vital role in preserving the environment, particularly in advancing decarbonization efforts that have become a global priority. Instilling awareness of climate change in young people from an early age is essential, as they represent a key pillar in contributing to a greener future—one of the goals of the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) program.

The 13th Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) program has reached the mentorship phase for the top 25 proposals submitted by finalist schools across Indonesia. Since last year, Toyota Indonesia (PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia and PT Toyota-Astra Motor) has provided guidance to these schools. Following visits to several cities, including Mojokerto, Surabaya, Balikpapan, and Manado, today’s mentorship activity (Thursday, January 23, 2025) took place in Makassar.

Toyota Indonesia highly appreciates the environmental proposals submitted by the finalist schools of the 13th TEY. These proposals are founded on innovative, creative ideas that align with decarbonization efforts during the current energy transition era. The mentorship program, known as Genba, involves direct visits to schools to refine their project visions and missions, making them more practical, impactful, and inclusive of broader community involvement. This phase strengthens the commitment of TEY participants as the program celebrates its 20th year since its inception in 2005.

“The TEY program is not merely a competition; it is a platform to foster environmental awareness and real action among young people. We believe that with proper guidance and support, the ideas generated through TEY can significantly contribute to decarbonization and sustainable environmental preservation. Through TEY, we aim to support and facilitate young people’s efforts to realize intelligent, innovative, and sustainable decarbonization initiatives during this energy transition era,” said Bob Azam, Vice President Director of TMMIN, during a visit to SMAN 21 Makassar, one of the TEY finalists.

Under the theme “EcoActivism: Time to Act for the Planet,” the 13th TEY focuses on encouraging the younger generation to engage in decarbonization efforts. These initiatives go beyond merely reducing emissions—they also explore opportunities to develop community-based economic benefits. Achieving tangible results in decarbonization requires the synergy of all stakeholders, especially young people as primary contributors to a greener future.

“Toyota Eco Youth reflects our commitment to empowering Indonesian youth to be part of the solution to global environmental challenges. With the theme ‘EcoActivism: Time to Act for the Planet,’ we aim to instill the understanding that decarbonization efforts not only reduce carbon emissions but also open up new opportunities that can positively impact community economies. We are confident that, with proper mentorship, young people’s creative ideas can evolve into impactful actions for sustainability during this energy transition era,” explained Henry Tanoto, Vice President Director of TAM.

Renewable Energy from Fruit Waste: Biofuel and Fertilizer

One of the 25 TEY finalist schools, SMAN 21 Makassar, presented a proposal titled “Ecology Bio-simpfuel Action: Renewable Energy from Simpalak Fruit.” This proposal focuses on producing biofuel from the organic waste of Simpalak (Bintaro) fruit through fermentation and distillation processes.

The Simpalak fruit comes from a shade plant and is inedible for humans or animals. As a result, it is often considered waste, commonly seen littering streets due to a lack of knowledge about its potential uses. The seeds of the Simpalak fruit can be utilized as a renewable energy source, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Additionally, by-products from this process can be converted into fertilizer, contributing to waste reduction and environmental preservation.

“We hope that the guidance and support from Toyota Indonesia will further enhance our project’s potential to optimize the use of Simpalak fruit as biofuel, a renewable energy source that is environmentally friendly,” said a student from SMAN 21 Makassar.
