Karawang, West Java – For more than 50 years, Toyota Indonesia has grown and developed alongside society as part of mobility and transportation solutions, in line with technological progress. It has not been a short journey for Toyota Indonesia, which began its five-decade journey with CBU imports, continued with local production (components and engines) by domestic human resources, expanded its role as one of Toyota’s global production and export bases, developed local suppliers from upstream to downstream, and advanced Research & Development (R&D). This journey has been made possible through the continuous development of domestic human resources.
As a national automotive industry that encompasses more than 360,000 workers across the value chain, human resource development is the main asset in supporting the resilience and competitiveness of the industry. The strength of certified and skilled human resources plays a crucial role in increasing domestic industrial value-added, including through the establishment of the Toyota Indonesia Academy (AKTI), a higher education institution founded by PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) to produce graduates with high competitiveness and strong science and technology orientation. AKTI also supports the realization of Presidential Regulation No. 68 of 2022 on the Revitalization of Vocational Education and Training, which aims to align education and training with labor market needs through labor market information systems, the development of Centers of Excellence vocational schools, link-and-match-based higher vocational education, skills training, quality assurance, and active stakeholder involvement.

9th Graduation Ceremony
Answering the challenges of vocational education revitalization toward the future of mobility and electrification, today (Thursday, September 18, 2025), AKTI graduated its 9th cohort of 70 graduates: 54 students from the D2 Four-Wheel Assembly Operations (TOPKR) program and 16 students from the D1 Automated Machine Maintenance Engineering (TPMO) program. Carrying the graduation theme “Innovate Today, Own Tomorrow through Good Skill and Good Character Student”, AKTI graduates are expected to embody positive and adaptive character as a vital foundation for shaping individuals ready to meet future industry needs.
“For a decade, AKTI has been a reflection of synergy in supporting the Government’s aspiration to strengthen human resource development with a science- and technology-oriented approach, especially through vocational education. AKTI nurtures individuals as future leaders based on three main principles: leadership from the heart, listening and being part of solutions; collaboration built on empathy and mutual understanding among stakeholders; and a spirit of continuous learning, growth, and openness to new dynamics. AKTI can serve as a bridge to create excellent generations with an endless spirit of innovation, those who are Responsive, Agile, and Resilient, in advancing Indonesia’s automotive manufacturing industry in the future,” said Nandi Julyanto, President Director of PT TMMIN.
This graduation also marked the launch of a commemorative book celebrating AKTI’s 1st Decade in Indonesia. The book details its initiation, development over 10 years, and its role as a symbol of synergy in supporting the Government’s strategic agenda in vocational education. It also highlights that AKTI not only trains student skills but also instills attitudes, character, and values of innovation in the national automotive industry. A quality mindset is embedded in every student, grounded in the Toyota Way philosophy, which emphasizes customer orientation, integrity, responsibility, and the principle of Kaizen or continuous improvement.
“AKTI reflects the relationship between education and industry in producing graduates tailored to workforce needs, contributing to building the strength of national industry. The academy also spreads best practices or lessons learned for other industries aiming to develop human resources aligned with their needs. This HR transformation effort is also in line with Indonesia’s Asta Cita, which emphasizes ‘Strengthening Human Resource Development’ to advance science, technology, education, health, and gender equality, thereby boosting national competitiveness,” said Bob Azam, Vice President Director of PT TMMIN.
Since its establishment in December 2015 at TMMIN’s Karawang plant, AKTI has produced 429 highly competitive digital-native graduates, many of whom now work at PT TMMIN and within Toyota Indonesia’s supply chain. Some even serve as Team Leaders in Press, Assembly, and Welding Shops and have had overseas assignments in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan. AKTI graduates are projected to reach team leader positions faster and may eventually hold strategic roles in TMMIN and its supply chain. Starting with only 176 applicants and 32 accepted students in 2015, the number of applicants soared to 6,297 in 2024, with only 64 students admitted. Initially focused on the D1 TPMO program, AKTI later expanded to offer the D2 TOPKR4 program.

Future of Mobility and Electrification
AKTI prepares young generations not only with technical skills but also resilience and adaptability to meet the challenges of future mobility and vehicle electrification—an essential part of the transition toward low-emission automotive industries. Modern technologies such as automation, robotics, electric vehicles, and other environmentally friendly vehicles are integrated into the curriculum, aligning with an era that prioritizes efficient, intelligent, and sustainable manufacturing systems to address global challenges. AKTI also collaborates with polytechnics and universities to design forward-looking industrial curricula.
This is reflected in the application of green manufacturing, emphasizing energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental sustainability; mechatronics, combining mechanics, electronics, and control systems to enable precise automation; robotics, enhancing speed, accuracy, and workplace safety; and the Internet of Things (IoT), connecting machines, devices, and systems through digital networks to enable real-time data analysis for faster and more accurate decision-making. The combination of a quality mindset and a green mindset equips graduates to face the digital era’s demands for both quality and sustainability. A dojo-based learning environment that simulates real automotive industry conditions, combined with two semesters of industrial practice at Toyota plants and supplier companies, further strengthens students’ readiness for the workforce.
“During my time at AKTI, I gained not only skills and knowledge but also integrity, discipline, attitude, and morals. I applied all of these at PT TMMIN, which allowed me to be entrusted as a Team Leader at the Assembly Shop in a shorter time. I achieved this position because I believe that with hard work, we can achieve all our dreams,” said Aang Kristanto, AKTI alumnus – Team Leader at Assembly Shop, Karawang Plant 1.
Achievements in National and International Competitions
Beyond technical skills, AKTI graduates have also excelled in various national and regional competitions, both technical and non-technical. Their innovations have gained international recognition, including at Quality Control Circle (QCC) events and innovative idea competitions. In 2025, new milestones were achieved with a gold medal and a silver medal at the Asia Pacific Skill Contest in Thailand.
