Marking Its 55th Anniversary, Toyota Indonesia Partners with CATL to Strengthen Electrified Vehicle Battery Production Capabilities

Jakarta, April 20, 2026 – As it celebrates its 55th anniversary, PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has officially announced a strategic partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL), one of the world’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturers, to jointly develop electrified vehicle battery production in Indonesia.

Through this collaboration, TMMIN is investing IDR 1.3 trillion to support Indonesia’s efforts in strengthening the electrified vehicle industry ecosystem, including the battery supply chain from upstream to downstream.

This investment is part of Toyota’s long-term commitment to growing alongside Indonesia. Over the past 55 years, Toyota has invested a total of IDR 100 trillion, involving more than 360,000 workers across production, supply chain, distribution, and after-sales services through its network of local suppliers and dealers. These efforts have resulted in cumulative production of 10 million Toyota vehicles and 14 million units from the Toyota Group.

This initiative reflects Toyota’s Best in Town approach in supporting sustainable national industrial development by strengthening local capabilities in alignment with government strategic priorities. It is also expected to accelerate the transition toward carbon neutrality through a multipathway approach, utilizing proven technologies such as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV), and Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV) using bioethanol blends—tailored to diverse mobility needs in the Indonesian market.

“Currently, TMMIN operates a battery pack production line at its Karawang plant to manufacture batteries for the Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix HEV, Veloz HEV, and Yaris Cross HEV. Through this strategic collaboration with CATL in Indonesia, we aim to enhance our battery assembly capabilities, including full-scale production of battery cells and modules. Components that are currently imported will eventually be produced by Indonesian talent. This partnership will not only expand investment but also support Toyota’s multipathway initiative toward carbon neutrality by strengthening the local supply chain,” said TMMIN President Director, Nandi Julyanto.

By increasing local battery content through deeper localization of battery cells and modules, Indonesia can enhance its human resource capabilities, reduce import dependency, strengthen the automotive industry, and support its ambition to become a global production and export hub for electrified vehicles and their key components.

This comprehensive approach marks an important milestone for TMMIN as the first Toyota subsidiary in Southeast Asia to export batteries to the global market, starting in the second half of 2026. This includes not only batteries installed in HEVs but also battery components exported independently, reinforcing Indonesia’s role in the global electrified vehicle supply chain.

“Step by step, this process strengthens the existing supply chain by transforming conventional vehicle manufacturing capabilities into fully integrated electrified vehicle production, particularly HEVs. In addition to maintaining the current supplier ecosystem, TMMIN is progressively enhancing it and potentially attracting new supply chain partners to support industrial transformation,” said TMMIN Vice President Director, Bob Azam.

In its development process, deepening the localization of HEV batteries used in Indonesia and the surrounding region is a critical step for the national automotive industry to widely adopt electrification solutions while building a strong local ecosystem. This initiative also contributes to achieving Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2060 goals, while improving the trade balance through increased exports and reduced reliance on oil imports.

An integrated electrified vehicle ecosystem will strengthen the national automotive supply chain, particularly batteries as one of the most crucial and high-value components, enhancing Indonesia’s position in the global electrification industry. This collaboration and investment not only drive manufacturing sector growth through deeper HEV battery localization but also elevate local industries into producers of higher value-added components.

According to GAIKINDO data, from January to December 2025, electrified vehicle sales reached 177,367 units, growing 71% compared to 103,452 units in the previous year. During the same period, electrified vehicle production reached 127,420 units, with 99,162 units for the domestic market and around 55% of total sales fulfilled by local production. HEVs were the main contributor, totaling 97,462 units or approximately 76.5% of all electrified vehicles produced in Indonesia in 2025.
