Toyota’s journey in supporting sustainable mobility began more than 20 years ago. The first-generation Toyota Prius, launched in December 1997, became the world’s first mass-produced hybrid car1. Since then, Toyota has led global innovation in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). The Prius successfully combined a gasoline engine with an electric motor to reduce emissions while significantly improving fuel efficiency. Its presence marked an important milestone for the global automotive industry, where energy efficiency and environmental awareness became key priorities.

This global success was later brought into the domestic market to address environmental challenges at the regional level. In Indonesia, Toyota’s commitment to sustainable mobility has become increasingly evident through its localization efforts. In 2022, Toyota began local production of the Kijang Innova Zenix Hybrid, marking an important milestone in making hybrid technology accessible to Indonesian consumers2. This step paved the way for expanding other hybrid vehicle lineups, such as the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid EV and Veloz Hybrid EV.
The expansion of these models is part of a broader strategy called “Multi-Pathway.” This strategy is based on the understanding that each region has different infrastructure and energy needs. Rather than relying on a single technology, Toyota offers a variety of environmentally friendly vehicle options, ranging from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), to Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). These five approaches ensure that the transition toward clean mobility can be carried out inclusively without waiting for full charging infrastructure readiness.
The implementation of this strategy has proven effective in increasing public acceptance of electrified vehicles. Hybrid vehicles have become one of the most realistic transition solutions, as they do not require drastic changes in driving habits while still contributing significantly to emissions reduction3. The strong consumer interest in locally produced models such as the Innova Zenix Hybrid EV demonstrates that people are becoming more aware of the importance of fuel efficiency alongside reliable performance.
Toyota’s support for an environmentally friendly ecosystem goes beyond vehicle sales. To strengthen public understanding, Toyota has introduced initiatives such as “EV Smart Mobility” in various strategic areas. Through this program, people are given the opportunity to directly experience electrified vehicles in their daily activities. These educational efforts are crucial in building consumer trust in the durability and safety of batteries and hybrid systems over the long term.
Fundamentally, all these efforts are driven by a long-term vision outlined in the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050. Toyota aims to eliminate CO2 emissions not only from vehicle tailpipes but also from the entire lifecycle, including manufacturing processes and component recycling. This global vision is implemented in Indonesia through higher factory emission standards and the use of renewable energy in manufacturing facilities.
Through consistent efforts maintained since the launch of the Prius in 1997 to the strengthening of local production today, Toyota continues to reinforce its role as a pioneer in sustainable mobility. By integrating advanced technology with a deep understanding of local market characteristics, Toyota ensures that the journey toward carbon neutrality can be enjoyed by everyone. Moving forward, these innovations are expected to continue evolving to preserve the environment while advancing the national automotive industry.
