The Importance of Indonesia’s Manufacturing Industry
The manufacturing industry plays a key role in driving national economic development. Beyond its role in creating jobs and strengthening citizens’ purchasing power, the sector contributes directly to the resilience of the national economy through tax revenues and growing export performance, which in turn support a healthier trade balance. Building a strong and competitive domestic industry, including a robust supply chain, is also crucial to advancing economic self-reliance and reducing dependence on imported materials and components that are vulnerable to global price fluctuation
Toyota’s journey of growth alongside the national automotive industry began in the early 1970s through the import of complete vehicles. Over the decades the company has advanced, with key milestones, evolving into a local assembler, then expanding to full domestic production by producing engines, components, and completely built vehicles. To support the continuity of production, the domestic supply chain was also strengthened, which helps the penetration to export markets, and establishing trust as a global automotive production and export hub, particularly for small and 3-row vehicles. Keeping pace with technological progress, Toyota Indonesia has also entered the era of electrification, by producing and exporting Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs).
As a labor-intensive industry, Toyota Indonesia actively contributes to strengthening the Indonesian automotive industry ecosystem through strategic partnership with more than 240 Tier-1 local suppliers and more than 520 local Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers. This ecosystem not only reduces dependence on imports but also encourages the growth of domestic industrial independence, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), as a vital part of the national supply chain. The results of this collaboration are clearly visible in the local content of Toyota Indonesia products, which has reached 80% or beyond.
In Indonesia, Toyota Group's cumulative investment of approximately Rp100 trillion has played a significant role in boosting economic growth. This investment, along with a network of local suppliers and dealers, has engaged over 360,000 workers across different sectors, including production, supply chain, distribution, and after-sales service. By partnering with local suppliers, they not only foster industrial self-reliance but also strengthen the economic base and enhance the well-being of the community as a whole.
The automotive industry also contributes significantly to tax revenue-not only through Income Tax (PPh), Value Added Tax (PPN), and Sales Tax on Luxury Goods (PPnBM) which are imposed nationally, but also through Regional Taxes such as Motor Vehicle Tax (PKB) and Motor Vehicle Transfer Fee (BBNKB). According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, these regional taxes are among the key sources of Regional Original Revenue (PAD), playing an important role in shaping regional fiscal capacity.
“Thanks to our strong manufacturing ethos and commitment to quality, Toyota Indonesia has produced 10 million units and exported 3 million vehicles – showcasing Indonesian talent, ready to compete globally with world-class products, “said Nandi Julyanto, President Director of TMMIN.
Export as a Driver of Economic Growth
The manufacturing industry continues to affirm its position as a key pillar of the Indonesian economy. According to data from Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the manufacturing sector is projected to contribute 18.98% to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 0.9% to total national economic growth, which reached 5.03% in 2024.
As a key player in the national automotive industry, Toyota Indonesia has undertaken a long journey in supporting the growth of exports driven by Indonesian talent. Started with the first shipment of the third-generation Kijang to Brunei Darussalam in 1987, the export market has continued to develop. In 2004, Indonesia was entrusted to become the production and export base for the Kijang Innova as part of the global model series, namely the Innovative International Multi-Purpose Vehicle (IMV). The number of destination countries and export volumes grew significantly, reaching a cumulative of 1 million units in 2018 and 2 million export units in 2022.
Furthermore, the Avanza product, favored by Indonesian consumers, have also demonstrated strong performance and acceptance in international markets, with annual export volumes exceeding 40,000 units. Following its success, the Agya, introduced as an affordable Low-Cost Green Car (LCGC) for Indonesian consumers, has also expanded into the global market, with annual export volumes exceeding 30,000 units. Electrified vehicle models such as the Innova Zenix Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Yaris Cross (HEV) have been exported to various with a combined volume exceeding 39,000 units, highlighting the national automotive industry’s readiness to support the transition to sustainable electrified mobility from 2025. This journey allowed Toyota’s total vehicles from Indonesia to reach 3 million units, that have been exported to more than 100 countries which is an evidence for Indonesian people’s capability appreciated in all over the world.
The Future of the National Automotive Industry
As an effort to support energy resilience and emission reduction, Toyota strives to provide various technologies (multi-pathway) with a variety of electrified vehicles, such as Hybrid Electrified Vehicle (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electrified Vehicle (PHEV), Battery Electrified Vehicle (BEV), and Fuel Cell Electrified Vehicle (FCEV) that meet the diverse mobility needs of customers.
In the Indonesian market, Toyota provides both BEVs and HEVs, while also involved in trialing Flexy Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) powered by bioethanol. This initiative not only promotes sustainable energy but also supports the welfare of Indonesian farmers and reduces reliance on imported fuels.

This long-term initiative has resulted in strong collaboration and continuous support from the government to further enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia’s automotive industry. Toyota Indonesia and Toyota Group remains committed to serving as an active partner in national development and contributing to Indonesia economic growth while creating inclusive and sustainable mobility solutions for all. This has resulted in cumulative production of 10 million units of Toyota vehicles and 14 million units of Toyota Group vehicles.
On this occasion, Toyota Indonesia extends its heartfelt appreciation to all loyal customers for their continued trust and support, which serve as a driving force behind the efforts to deliver innovation and sustainable mobility solutions for Indonesia’s future.
