The First Production of Toyota Indonesia Electrification Vehicles “From Indonesia for the World”


Karawang – Today, November 21, 2022, Toyota Indonesia welcomes line-off of local production of the 7th generation Kijang Innova Zenix by PT. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) in Karawang – West Java. With an investment of 4.2 trillion rupiah, the new Kijang Innova is also available in Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) option equipped with locally assembled batteries. As we gear up to enter the era of electrification, the local production of the latest generation of Kijang Innova reflects the growth of the automotive industry along with the Indonesian consumers ever since it was first introduced 45 years ago.

The Kijang Innova Zenix HEV also made history as Toyota Indonesia's first electrified model to be exported to 13 countries in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, in line with our commitment to continue to contribute to Indonesia's trade balance. Overall, Kijang Innova Zenix will be exported to more than 40 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East with a planned volume of 8,500 units/year on the first year.

With high fuel efficiency for both conventional and hybrid types, Kijang Innova Zenix is part of Toyota's commitment to support the government's target of reducing carbon emissions by providing a wide selection of fuel-efficient vehicles, vehicles with renewable fuels, and vehicles with electrified technology, namely Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) such as the previously introduced Toyota bZ4X, and including hydrogen in the future, so that more and more people can contribute to emission reduction.

The line-off of Kijang Innova Zenix was witnessed by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Ambassador Japan for RI Kanasugi Kenji, and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) CEO of Asia Region and President of Toyota Motor Asia Pacific Hao Quoc Tien, who was accompanied by the management of Toyota Indonesia, including President Director of PT TMMIN Warih Andang Tjahjono, Vice President Director of PT TMMIN Nandi Julyanto, Vice President Director of PT. Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) Henry Tanoto, as well as the Board of Directors of PT TMMIN and PT TAM.

“This Kijang Innova Zenix production is our effort to continue in contributing to the development of the Indonesian automotive industry. We would like to thank the Government of Indonesia for their strong support in the development of the national automotive industry and to the Indonesian people who have trusted the Kijang as the vehicle of choice for Indonesian families for 7 generations. Of course, we continue to strive to develop and improve the performance of the Kijang, to be able to contribute more to the Indonesian nation and answer the increasingly diverse needs of customers, especially when entering the challenges of the current electrification era," said Warih Andang Tjahjono, President Director of PT TMMIN.

Global Human Resources

The 7th generation Kijang Innova which absorbs around 1,000 new workers, was developed by a global team together with Indonesian engineers who actively and integrally contribute in every stage of development, including the production line. This is in accordance with Toyota Indonesia's philosophy of "We Make People Before We Make Products" which is the basis for the sustainable development of human resources at Toyota Indonesia and at Toyota Indonesia's local suppliers.

Equipped with a global TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform that provides satisfying driving comfort and pleasure supported with the latest Toyota Safety System 3 that comprises of Pre-Collision System (PCS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Lane Tracing Alert (LTA), and Automatic High Beam (AHB) as well as the 5th Generation Hybrid System, Kijang Innova Zenix production is supported by 120 local engineers with various skills that aim to create global quality human resources to produce products and manufacturing processes of global standards.

Toyota Indonesia believes that the transformation of the automotive industry can optimize existing local supply chain capabilities by increasing human resource capabilities and implementing technological advances according to the challenges of the electrification era in the production process. Therefore, Toyota Indonesia collaborates with education sector to jointly disseminate knowledge about electrification such as with universities through research collaborations and a series of National Seminars. Toyota Indonesia has also established the xEV Center which is a Learning, Capability, and Research facility for Electrification, Green Energy, and Mobility Technologies as a means for Indonesian human resources to deepen their understanding of the technology and ecosystem of the automotive industry in the future

And on this occasion, Toyota Indonesia conveyed its collaboration with 10 Vocational High Schools (SMK), 5 of them from Karawang Regency, in building electrification education, starting with the provision of 100 Augmented Reality containing electrification knowledge.

Collaborating with More than 100 Local Supply Chains to Strengthen the National Automotive Industry

In the development of Kijang Innova Zenix, Toyota Indonesia provides full commitment and attention to active participation towards strengthening the depth of the national automotive industry by cooperating with more than 100 local suppliers. A total of 8 local suppliers are also involved in assembling the HEV battery at TMMIN's Karawang factory.

"Kijang Innova Zenix is proof of the increasing ability and quality of local supply chains to enter the era of electrification, growing together with the national automotive industry which has been supporting the Indonesian economy and trade balance," said Bob Azam, Director of External Relations of PT TMMIN.

Toyota Indonesia builds partnerships with local suppliers, including small and medium industries (SMIs), so that we can grow together and improve quality to meet both the advanced needs of the automotive industry and our customers. A special function in TMMIN is dedicated to handling the issue of supplier development from skill transfer, standards of safety, quality, efficiency and delivery to management function. TMMIN is embracing first tier suppliers to transfer this knowledge to their suppliers and so forth to create ripple effects.
