Production and Export of Toyota Indonesia’s Second Electrified Model - Yaris Cross HEV version Reached 80 Percent of Local Content Ratio

(Karawang, 13/06) PT. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) celebrates the Production Line-off and Export of the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and gasoline version at the TMMIN Karawang Plant 1 and 2, Karawang Barat – Jawa Barat.

With an investment of 2.5 trillion rupiah, the Yaris Cross is the second electrified vehicle model locally produced by Toyota Indonesia for domestic and export markets, after the incredible success of the Kijang Innova Zenix.

“Production of the Yaris Cross is a part of Toyota Indonesia’s commitment to support the Indonesia government’s target in reducing emission levels by providing more options of electrification technology and fuel-efficient vehicle models for a diversified range of customers. The Indonesian made Yaris Cross, with an 80 percent local content ratio, for both the HEV and gasoline version are also exported to countries in Asia and Latin America and will contribute to the Economic growth of Indonesia,” said TMMIN President Director Warih Andang Tjahjono.

The HEV and gasoline version of the Yaris Cross produce low CO2 emissions and deliver high fuel efficiency for the customers. The Yaris Cross is expected to contribute to the decarbonisation target of the Indonesian Government and reach specific mobility needs of more customers. The efficient conventional and the self-charging Hybrid Electric Vehicle versions of the Yaris Cross are further examples of Toyota Indonesia’s earnest attempt to accelerate carbon neutrality through technology that can be accepted by the masses, and also forms part of Global Toyota’s multiple pathways approach of decarbonization, which aims to offer new and renewable energy fuelled, and electrification technology-driven (HEV, PHEV, BEV, and FCEV) Toyota models that meet the needs of all customers immediately.

Made by Indonesian for the World

Production of the Yaris Cross continues to strengthen Indonesia’s position as one of Toyota’s premier production and export bases in the Asia Pacific region as we move to the electrification era. Toyota Indonesia is once again the first country to produce Yaris Cross HEV after the Kijang Innova Zenix last year. Not only that, the battery for this model is assembled locally at Toyota Karawang Plant 2 Battery Line, while the engine is produced at Toyota Karawang Plant 3.

“Local production of the Yaris Cross, including its battery and engine, is also a part of our contribution to Indonesia’s industrial depth, especially through involvement and development of local supply chains. For the Yaris Cross, a total of 116 suppliers, 12 of them new suppliers, are involved in our production process, resulting to achieve local content ratio of 80 percent. Although we faced many challenges to get to this stage, we firmly believe that development and strengthening of Indonesia’s automotive industry could increase Indonesia’s potential and positioning in the global electrification vehicle eco-system,” said TMMIN External Relations Director Bob Azam.

As an export base, Toyota Indonesia will export more than 22,000 units of HEV and gasoline version of the Yaris Cross in 2023 for countries in Asia and Latin America. Toyota Indonesia is planning to expand the Yaris Cross export continuously, and by 2025 Toyota Indonesia is planning to ship 40,000 units of both versions to a range of markets.

With the launch of the Yaris Cross in the domestic and export markets, it is hoped that it can contribute to the Government's efforts to strengthen the trade balance. In addition, Toyota Indonesia has also set a target to increase the export volume of Toyota brand vehicles by 5% at 316,000 units at the end of 2023. This year Toyota Indonesia will also expand export destination countries, especially to the growing Africa region.

Going forward, Toyota Indonesia will continue to strive to meet consumer needs by presenting various models of electrified vehicles, in line with increasing the capabilities of the national automotive industry's human resources, especially to sharpen the skills needed to answer the challenges of the electrification era such as batteries, new renewable energy including hydrogen, connectivity, and maintaining Indonesia's role as a key global automotive and mobility player.(*)
